Illuminating Bathroom Possibilities: Façade Idea 002

I have been contemplating on bathroom illumination possibilities for quite sometime. I initially thought of experimenting with conventional and safe lighting solutions, such as using several types of  LED to create a media facade-like lighting source and modifying its ambient effects. In that sense, my mock-up would have been created with an arduino powered 8X8 LED Matrix with some processing programming, however, more I think about it, it appeared to be so redundant to say the least. 

In that sense, I have decided to take a little bit of a risk. Going back to my first idea of replacing the physical light with digital media solution, I thought of combining the projection mapping technique and the characteristic of prism to create a light installation. Thus, accordingly, the above sketches illustrate the configuration of my new mock-up idea. 

The prisms are attached to a transparent or 2 way-mirrored surface, and the animation would be projected on the surface from behind. Following my experiment with Prism and iPod touch, I'm also considering the possibility of LCD screen use.

Illuminating Bathroom Possibilities: Proposal

In many conventional commercial or residential premises, when compared to other spaces of edifices, the bathroom lightings tend to be monotonous with its mere focus on giving people good visibility. In that sense, this project's goal is to merge fundamental aspects of the space illumination; from aesthetic appeal, ergonomic facet to energy efficiency,  and digital media art forms to propose a constructive and dynamic light fitting for contemporary bath spaces.  

As such, my initial idea is to create a bathing and grooming space where light therapeutic values are digitally accentuated as media façade and in which ensures harmonious lighting for each three facility areas; toilet, bathing and washing, for both day and night uses. 

>CONCEPTS

1. Replacing physical walls and/or partitions, windows with digital solution. 

2. Designing crisp light for personal grooming in the morning and visionary lighting scheme for relaxation in the evening.

3. Converting light sources to art form to achieve effective ambient lighting display.

>TARGETS 

Medium-scale contemporary apartment, house and hotel room owners. 

Illuminating Bathroom Possibilities

In connection with my thesis project, I will be also documenting the process and developments of a product design course, conducted by Professor Andrea Dichiara, which aims to explore the world of interior design and technology to develop a contemporary bathroom products and ambience within. Through this project, I plan to explore the possibilities of light installation for a bathroom space with its vast emphasis on digital lighting solution to gain in-depth knowledge in architectural lighting design.
